Following on from winning my first award in March as Best Newcomer VA 2018, I have gone and earned a second trophy in the UK VA Awards this year. I got the runner-up award for the VA of the Year Scotland, one of the regional awards held in Glasgow last Friday. Being a relatively new virtual assistant, I knew I was up against some very strong and well-established Scottish-based VAs. However, managing to come second place in the whole of Scotland is a wonderful achievement to have made this soon in my VA career.
It was also of course lovely to catch up and meet with other VAs that are based in Scotland. I like to think that we VAs are quite a friendly bunch who are more about collaboration rather than competition. One VA’s strength might be another VA’s weakness, so we make effort to help each other where we can. It’s still quite a relatively small (but growing!) industry, so it’s nice to have the chance to network with like-minded professionals. We got chatting about all sorts of things, such as insurance, marketing, VA trainers and bookkeeping. It’s lovely to be part of such a great and supportive network.
I’ll be honest; like many business owners and freelancers, this work does have its ups and downs and I occasionally worry about whether I made the right decision in pursuing this type of career path. However, its wins like this that give me a bit of kudos that I’m actually doing not too bad. I love owning and running my own business and I love helping other people with theirs. I definitely want to continue pushing myself to be the best that I can be.
